Commercial Ice Machine Maintenance

How to extend the life of your Commercial Ice Machine

Your ice machine withstands a lot of wear and tear throughout its lifetime. Constant production and dispensing of ice can take its toll on a machine if not properly maintained. Here are a few tips to make sure your commercial ice maker keeps running smoothly for years to come.

Clean and sanitize your ice machine’s water system regularly- Mineral scale that builds up on your water system components over time can coat the freezing surface of the machine, causing ice cubes to stick to the plate and not drop properly. Prevent the buildup of mineral scale on the interior of your commercial ice maker by circulating a mild phosphoric acid solution throughout the water system.

Follow manufacturers’ instructions for cleaning your unit- Use the recommended type and amount of cleaner.  Once the cleaning process is complete, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for sanitizing the unit with a special solution or 5% hypochlorite solution (bleach). Sanitizing your commercial ice maker will eliminate any algae and bacteria lurking in the system and also help slow future bacteria growth.

Clean condenser- The condenser unit of your commercial machine needs to be cleaned and inspected on a regular basis to ensure that it is free of grease, dirt, and grime. Use a special brush to clean coil fins on condenser coils. Use a non-corrosive cleanser and make sure to rinse thoroughly after cleaning. Check your manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning the condenser of your specific unit.

Clean Exterior of Ice Maker- The stainless steel unit and storage bin of your large commercial ice machine should be wiped down on a daily basis with a soft cloth and mild cleaner. Keeping the exterior of your commercial ice machine clean at all times.   A  dirty exterior surface can lead to bacteria and other particles infiltrating the interior of the machine.

Preventative Maintenance

Look into PM checks- PM (preventative maintenance) checks can help save your business money and time. A   routine inspection of your machine can minimize potentially hazardous or unsanitary issues.  If you are in the East North Carolina Area, contact us to discuss a Preventative Maintenance plan for your large commercial ice machine.
